Speedometer (JPN) - Private (2002)
(Toys Factory)
The second full-length album by this Japanese ensemble, Speedometer (not the UK Funk band) and as with their debut album "...Or Not" they continue to explore the limits of downtempo electronica. Seasoned with the occasional pinch of sweetly layered female vocals and turntablism, the result nudge the traditional downtempo envelope by combining elements of smooth jazz (as on "Walk"), and experimental electronica (as on "Wake Up Afternoon," with its Japanese talk-radio samples). Fans of Kruder & Dorfmeister and Zero 7 will feel at home with Private.

I. Piercing the Veil (2001)
(AUM Fidelity)
At first you may consider this release as a bunch of kooky-crazy out-jazz because—“What?! Just drums and acoustic bass and no ‘real’ instruments!?” And then you listen and what you hear is: swing, groove, excitement, melody, and beauty. And you thought you didn’t like “free jazz”; Piercing The Veil by bassist William Parker and percussionist Hamid Drake was originally issued in 2001 and gave rise to giant amounts of praise and attention. it is considered among the finest and most accessible recordings made by “free players” in recent years.

II. Organic Grooves - Black Cherry (2002)
(Aum Fidelity)
Maintaining the philosophy that accompanied PIERCING THE VEIL, This release By ORGANIC GROOVES (a collective of DJ’s and instrumentalists) is a remix of the original PIERCING THE VEIL and far from being remixed out , William Parker & Hamid Drake both participated in this release and demonstrate their mastery of the pulse and the driving force that surrounds it. All of the cuts relate one to one to the cuts on PIERCING THE VEIL.

Afronaught - Shapin' Fluid (2001)
(Apollon)
Afronaught - Orin Walters (Bugz in The Atic) is fusing soul-jazz experimentation with leftfield dance techniques, Walter explores the range of styles that influence the fractured beat movement in this release. Don Ricardo takes a vocal turn on "Take U There," a late-1970s soul capsule , then a sound set off by Loretta Heywood on the downtempo number "Just A'nutha Day." The title track wraps a mellow uptempo vibe before leading in to a call to dance by Tittla on "Work It." (URB Magz)
