The Landrus Project - True Colors (2003)

The Landrus Project was formed in year of 2000 by Brian Landrus who is a woodwind specialist, composer/arranger, and educator. He somehow managed to bring some talented and experienced musicians to play in this rather eclectic ensemble. This multi-flavored ensemble features a core of eight musicians, but sometimes has as many as 14 playing on stage together. The diversity comes across more clearly in True Colors, the group’s second release. The album heaviest overtone is Jazz , as Landrus himself used to play in a Jazz quartet, but it isn’t that jazz that we expect to hear from any jazz outfit. The band borrows features from soul, funk, big band, hip-hop and classical--in other words, whatever they like. There's a gritty female vocals from Sheherezade Stone , flaming scratch work from DJ Ecto One and of course Landrus’ woodwind work . It should be noted that the band members have all played individually with ‘heavy cats’ in the entertainment and jazz worlds or with world-class talent at UNR competitions and here they play very well together. Landrus writes a majority of the tracks, sometimes up to three a week. He brings the skeleton of a melody or a progression to the band, and they have an inspiration free-for-all. The end product the album's 18 tracks in all, glide through easily , not a difficult listen as the different sounds blend nicely.
