Kellylee Evans - Fight or Flight ? (2006)

An eclectic debut album from Canadian born Kellylee Evans with a very smooth style that slides through jazz, soul, R & B, and blues evading any categorization. However, she definitely has the delivery of a fine jazz singer -- her rich voice is relaxed but shows remarkable control and depth. The musical backing ranges from a light rumba to a bit of mainstream jazz to hints of airy funk and reggae. The music is all original, and her compositions are also first-rate. In 2004 she was awarded second place in the prestigious Thelonious Monk International Jazz Vocals Competition, held at The Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. The judges – Quincy Jones, Al Jarreau, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Kurt Elling, Jimmy Scott and Flora Purim chose Kellylee out of a pool of over 160 gifted vocalists from around the world.

New Cool Collective - Trippin' (2005)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Perhaps no longer so "new", but this Dutch octet remains as cool as ever. Fronted by saxophonist Benjamin Herman and trumpeter David Rockefeller, the NCC specialise in a smart brand of dance-jazz-funk that foregrounds the percussion-driven rhythm section. The band toys with retro concepts of sound and style without feeling the need to become full-on revivalists. The second disc is a collaboration, with Afrobeat pioneer Tony Allen who temporarily replacing Joost Kroon on the drums.

Drugs - A Prescription for Mis-America (2004)

Drugs: The Mis-Americans,(Rx) a band with a critically acclaimed debut album and an underground reputation for a live show that rivals the best on the jam band circuit. This super group features P Funk's frontman Mike Clip Payne, Robert "Chicken" Burke, Adam Widoff (Toshi Reagon's Big Lovely), Joey Eppard,Stephanie McKay, along with Funkadelic's Garry Shider and George Clinton. Produced, conceived, and recorded in the famed town of Woodstock. The idea for the band sprang from the ashes of the infamous 1999 Woodstock festival. The founding members all played there with different bands. It was apparent to each that nothing new was happening musically. The fiery aftermath had as much to do with boredom as anything else. So... they decided to take it to the stage.
