Urban Species - Blanket (1998)

"Formed in Tottenham, London, England, in the late 80s, Urban Species were tipped as the next potential breakthrough in UK hip-hop. They originally comprised lead rapper Mint (Peter Akinrinola) and DJ Renegade (b. Winston Small). Toaster Slim (b. Rodney Green) later joined. The trio started to produce small runs of white labels, distributing them under the names of either Mint or Renegade. This earned them a reputation among both pirate radio stations and clubs. Even the hip New York stations Kiss and WBLS picked up on one of their tracks, "It's My Thing", but they were hamstrung by finances and unable to capitalize. They came to the attention of Talkin" Loud Records boss Gilles Peterson, who signed them in 1991." (Discogs)

It's been a while we never heard anything from them. This is their last release and it's dating back to 1998. Some young talents were featured in this 1998 album among others Imogen Heap, Elizabeth Troy, and Jeffery Darnell. Imogen Heap appeared on the title track and this was way before Frou Frou or Speak For Yourself.

DAG were a funk outfits from Raleigh, NC. They were : Bobby Patterson (Bass, Vocal), Brian Dennis (Guitar), Doug Jervey (keyboardist) and Kenny Soule (drumm). The foursome played the local scene, honing their skills and chemistry in bars and other watering holes for several years and garnered a cult following around their hometown. The band eventually earned the attention of the major labels; they signed with Columbia, releasing their debut album Righteous in 1994. It was a modest regional success and earned some positive reviews in national publications. Their 1998 follow-up, Apartment #635, was not as effective, though it still received some critical acclaim. A six-song compilation album, called A Guide to Groovy Lovin', was also released that year. The band split soon after due to changes in musical preferences.

Sakesho - We Want You To Say (2005)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Andy Narell now performs with Sakésho a jazz quartet and this is their second release. The line-up and setting is Andy Narell on the steel pan accompanied by pianist Mario Canonge, bassist Michel Alibo and drummer Jean Philippe Fanfant. Looking at the setting we know that this isn't typical for a jazz quartet, and when we observe further on the other personnel we know that this will be something extra-ordinary.
Pianist Mario Canonge is a brilliant virtuoso pianist. Canonge has worked with an impressive array of singers and musicians, showing that he's equally at home performing with Afro-Cuban groups as he is accompanying sultry jazz divas.
Bassist Michel Alibo is considered as one of jazz and world music's most accomplished and influential musicians. Bass player of choice, not to just some of world music's most visible stars, he's also the premier bassist for entire subcategories of world styles. Michel has laid down textbook grooves in Latin, Caribbean, African, and fusion forms in such subgenres as beguine, reggae, zouk, soukos, groka and many more.
Drummer Jean Philippe Fanfant have recorded over 300 CDs with musicians like Kassav, Angilique Kidjo, Philippe Lavil, Tania Maria and many others. He also wrote and published a book about Afro Caribbean grooves. When we add all these with good production, great material, plus the ever important chemistry, we know we wouldn't be dissapointed.

Telefuzz - Sleep (2002)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Upstairs Recordings in Canada is home to Telefuzz aka Don Verbrilli the Vancouver based electronic pioneer who produces intoxicating electronic sounds. Telefuzz is in fact Don’s second creative project, activated by default when atmospheric conditions or other imbalances affect his ability to ply the sentient winds of the stratosphere particularly when working on his flagship project - The Verbrilli Sound. Telefuzz's Sleep is an excellent recording of downtempo and chilled grooves, vaguely jazzy but mature. It features 12 tracks, highlighting Don Verbrilli's varied but consistently intoxicating electronic sound by blending elements of breakbeat, jazz, funk, tribals in a series of lush, ethereal synth pads that rise and fade up through and behind the rhythms.
